from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johanna Kappes (* 1873 ; † 1933 ) was a German doctor. She was the first woman to be enrolled at a university in Germany .

Life

Kappes was a pioneer in equality even before she graduated . Together with Rahel Straus, she was one of the first high school students to graduate from the first German girls' high school in Karlsruhe (today's Lessing high school ). Both women had the desire Medicine study, Straus went to the University of Heidelberg and Kappes at the University of Freiburg. The resistance against a woman at a university was great, which is why she visited several professors to convince them of her abilities. With their permission, Kappes was finally allowed to attend lectures, but was unable to complete an exam as a listener . During their first semester, the “ Verein Frauenbildung-Frauenstudium ” encouraged women to fight for equal admission as students. Thereupon Kappes wrote a petition to the Senate on November 2, 1899 , which the Senate rejected. Gustav Steinmann , as protector of the university, forwarded the petition to the responsible ministry in Karlsruhe . On February 28, 1900, Kappes and four other women were able to enroll retroactively to the beginning of the winter semester 1899/1900. The services already performed were taken into account.

In 1904 she did her doctorate at the University of Freiburg and married the doctor Heinrich Worminghaus. Together they opened a joint practice in Nuremberg , where she worked until her death.
