Johanna Marianne Freystein , also Freistein (* May 1, 1760 in Leipzig ; † July 21, 1807 there ), was a German painter , draftsman and copyist .

Life

Johanna Marianne Freystein was born in Leipzig as the daughter of a senior post commissioner. Her family was friends with Adam Friedrich Oeser , Leipzig painter and director of the drawing academy there , where she received her first drawing lessons. In 1796 she went to Dresden and studied landscape painting with Johann Christian Klengel . She also copied works from the Gemäldegalerie, including Jacob van Ruisdael , Aert van der Neer and Jakob Philipp Hackert . She was one of the few women who were members of the academy and who took part in academy exhibitions. In 1807 she moved back to Leipzig and lived there with her sister until her death.

Many of her works can no longer be found today. In the catalogs for the Dresden academy exhibitions 1801 to 1805, as well as the Leipzig academy exhibition 1806, however, some of his own pictures, mostly landscapes, are recorded. These include views from the Great Garden in Dresden, the Plauenschen Grund or Lohmen Castle .
