The Blessed Joan of Portugal (* 6. February 1452 , † 12. May 1490 ) was a Portuguese princess of the House of Aviz .

Johanna was born as the daughter of the Portuguese King Alfonso V and his wife Isabel of Portugal . She was proclaimed heir to the throne in her cradle, but lost her claim to the throne when a male heir to the throne in the form of her younger brother Johann II was born to the Avis family. During the absence of her father from Portugal in 1471, who was on his Tangier campaign , she was briefly regent of the kingdom. In 1475 she entered the Dominican Order in Aveiro . In the period that followed, up to her death, she rejected all attempts at marriage by European princes.

Johanna died on May 12, 1490 in Aveiro and was buried in the monastery in Aveiro. Johanna was born in 1693 by Pope Innocent XII. beatified. Although she has not been canonized to this day, she is venerated in Portugal as the Holy Princess Johanna .
