Building history

The Unterlaaer statue of Johannes Nepomuk stands on a low pedestal and holds the cross in his arm. She was shattered in a car accident in 1977, where her head was lost and could not be found. In 1978 it was restored and placed on March 20th of this year in the old place.

John Nepomuk is usually represented - apart from Mary - as the only one of the saints with a star wreath (instead of a halo ), but this statue is missing.

background

The Bohemian King Wenceslaus IV had the priest Johannes Nepomuk fall from the Charles Bridge in Prague into the Vltava and drowned on March 20, 1393 . St. Nepomuk is therefore considered a "bridge saint". According to legend, he is said to have refused to break the secret of confession : He did not want to tell the king what his wife had confessed to him. However, the real reason for his execution was a political conflict between his bishop and the king. In 1729 Johannes Nepomuk was canonized. In the Baroque period , especially in the countries of the Habsburg Monarchy, an intense cult of Nepomuk arose . Sculptures of St. Nepomuk are next to crosses and depictions of Mary the most common Christian stone figures to be found outside of churches and are very often on or next to bridges.
