Detailed memorial texts

  1. Water tower in Zeppelinstrasse:
Auerbach had already had a central water supply network since 1876, which was based on the natural gradient of the urban soil relief. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the city experienced a strong economic boom and, associated with it, an enormous increase in population within a few decades. In order to be able to guarantee a stable water supply for all new households, the existing water network was supplemented in 1911 with an elevated tank (elevated tank III of the municipal waterworks) with an associated water tower and the Bendelstein hill southwest of the town center was chosen as the location.

The water tower is characterized by its striking design in the form of a crenellated castle tower. It towers above the approximately 40 by 60 meter plateau formed by the associated high-rise container and is accessed via a double staircase. Above the entrance to the earth container is the inscription “Städt. Auerbach waterworks, elevated tank III, built in 1911 ”. While the base storey and entrance area of the tower are plastered and lightly framed, the round tower shaft made of natural stone ashlar masonry stands out clearly from it. It is exposed to light through a row of square windows surrounding it and closed at the top by a brightly framed battlement.

The outer shape of the tower, which is a landmark that can be seen from afar, shows the effort to fit large-scale modern infrastructure projects into the surrounding landscape using traditional architectural forms and gives the water supply system a historical value. At the same time, as a testimony to the development of communal water supply at the beginning of the 20th century, it is of significance in terms of the history of technology.
  2. Water tower in the Alte Falkensteiner Straße:
The slim, octagonal water tower with the associated elevated earth tank was built in 1925/26 to stabilize the local water supply on a hill not far from the railway line. The Rebesgrün community acted as the builder, which, in connection with the construction of the drinking water dam in Muldenberg near Schöneck / Vogtl. founded, supraregional water supply association Talsperre Muldenberg had connected. The design goes back to civil engineer Walter Goebel from Zwickau, the company Gustav Richter AG from Plauen was entrusted with the execution of the brick-infilled and plastered concrete skeleton building.

The external appearance of the 24 meter high tower is structured by different plaster structures and window formats: While the load-bearing columns are highlighted like pilaster strips with rough plaster, there are slightly recessed, smoothly plastered and lighter-colored rectangular fields in between. In the middle of the tower shaft there is a row of round windows, above and directly below the eaves, rectangular windows on all sides provide light. A flat, curved canopy forms the top. The inscription "... and yet 1925–1926" above the plain entrance testifies to the difficult circumstances surrounding the construction of the tower at times of great unemployment and economic hardship. The date of the last renovation in 2009 is also noted here. The tank floor, which contains a steel, cylindrical tank for 60 m³ of water, is accessed via a concrete staircase that follows the wall. Today the water tower mainly serves as a lookout tower, only the underground container (capacity 250 m³) is integrated into the local water supply. As a testimony to the development of the communal water supply at the beginning of the 20th century, the tower is of importance in terms of local and supply history. At the same time, it is a landmark that defines the townscape.
  3. Bad Reiboldsgrün sanatorium:
    • History:
The spring was discovered in 1725, followed by a modest bathing establishment. The spring had not been used since 1825. In 1873 the Chemnitz ophthalmologist Carl Driver bought the property and set up the first lung sanatorium in Saxony. Dr. med. Driver is considered to be the initiator of the popular sanatorium in Saxony. This development in Saxony came from Bad Reiboldsgrün. Two simple farmhouses formed the starting point for the complex. The new buildings were supplemented in the farmhouse style. 1888 Construction of the Kurhaus (so-called winter home, Waldhofstrasse 1). At the time of construction, this building attracted a lot of attention due to its size and shape. This was followed by the construction of the casino with a dining room, kitchen and common rooms (later the kitchen and dining room wing, Waldhofstrasse 3), a laundry house, an electricity system, a house for doctors, the bath house and the well house for the Christiane-Eberhardinen-Quelle. In 1918 the 66 hectare facility and a 38 hectare wooded area were taken over by the Saxon Medical Association. Now animal husbandry was also used to care for the patients. The facility served as a sanatorium for medium-sized businesses.
1927/28 Extension to the Kurhaus (with operating theaters) as well as two reclining halls. 1930 Construction of the small chapel (not far from Waldhofstraße 19) according to plans by Curt Reimer, Dresden with interior decoration and painting by Paul Rössler, Dresden Art Academy. The park is laid out with foreign conifers and ponds (rudimentary today and can still be seen on the soil profile, large greenery and on the pathways).
During the Second World War the sanatorium served as a military hospital. After the end of World War II, TBC sanatorium until 1965, then closure.
1966–2004 Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Rodewisch. During this period, a nurses' home and two medical residences were built. After 1990 the so-called tower house (Waldhofstrasse 6), a villa (Waldhofstrasse 5) and the pond house (next to the chapel) were demolished. The facility is mostly empty today. The garden is neglected and partly only rudimentary. The ponds are probably filled. In spite of everything, the layout is still easy to read, as the oldest main building, the pathways and the trees in the park are still preserved.
As the oldest lung sanatorium in Saxony and the starting point of the people's sanatorium system, the complex is of great historical importance. Thanks to the original inventory, which is still good despite all the losses, the functionality of the sanatoriums of that time is still easy to read, from which the social and historical significance is derived.
The facility was built far outside the city in the middle of the forest, initially using an old farm. The newly created spa facility was harmoniously integrated into the natural surroundings. The new park represents an important link between the emerging buildings and the natural environment. Through these measures, the landscape is significantly shaped, from which the landscape-shaping importance of the former health resort is derived.
