Detailed memorial texts

  1. Railway bridge over a forest path:
The bridge, completed in 1865, which crosses the forest path near Bergen, is a testament to the history of traffic and a symbol of the relatively young railway system at the time, which also had a strong influence on the development of the Vogtland. The first Vogtland railway connection in 1846 (Werdau – Reichenbach line of the "Saxon-Bavarian Railway", extended to Plauen in 1848) quickly brought about a noticeable economic upswing in the towns involved and aroused the desire of other Vogtland municipalities for such a connection. As early as the 1850s, variants of a second line through the Vogtland to Bohemia (Eger) were discussed. Finally, a second "main line" (state railway) was built, which branched off from the existing one in Herlasgrün, tied Treuen, Auerbach and Falkenstein and then continued west towards Oelsnitz. This bridge is their structural testimony. Until 1878 the double-track line only connected West Saxony with Bohemia, until it was downgraded to a branch line ("secondary line") after a faster connection from Plauen to Oelsnitz was established.

Because of the requirements of the terrain, there were hardly any type buildings; there was an individual draft for almost every technical structure. The bridge is made of granite masonry. It is single-arched, and in contrast to the more freely offset rubble stones of the cheeks, the arch and its edges show a stone-carving treatment of the material. The accuracy of fit achieved in this way still results in static harmlessness almost 150 years after the building was built. It becomes clear how much effort was involved in erecting such “profane” structures. The extremely dignified structural treatment of contemporary evidence of technology is similar everywhere and provides information about the value of that time and the projection principles of such construction tasks.
