The Voigtland State Railway ( Voigtl. Sts. EB for short ) was originally a railway connection built by the Saxon state in the Saxon Vogtland . The route began at the Herlasgrün junction station on the Saxon-Bavarian State Railway and led via Falkenstein , Oelsnitz and Bad Elster to the Bohemian Eger . Only the sections Herlasgrün – Falkenstein and Oelsnitz – Eger (today: Cheb) are in operation today.

history

Already when the Saxon-Bavarian Railway was being built, a route had been discussed in the Vogtland that would have run further south via Lengenfeld and Auerbach . In 1856 the first concrete projects existed, which envisaged a branch line from the Saxon-Bavarian Railway towards Bohemia. In November 1856, a railway committee in Oelsnitz favored a railway connection through the Elstertal from Gera via Plauen , Adorf , Elster and Asch to Eger . An Auerbach committee, on the other hand, favored the Herlasgrün variant, which was realized later.

In the autumn of 1858, the planning work for a railway from Plauen began, but was interrupted during the Austro-French War in 1859. Only when the Bavarian plan to establish a connection between Hof and Eger became known in Saxony did the project begin to move. Now the connection from Herlasgrün via Auerbach and Falkenstein was favored. On June 21, 1861, the construction of the Voigtland state railway via Auerbach was decided in the Saxon state parliament.

A little later, the surveying work on the new run began. The route in Bohemia caused major problems, as the communities of Fleißen and Wildstein opposed the construction of the route. The required plots of land were offered for sale to the Saxon state so overpriced that they ultimately chose a route south of the Kapellenberg that led again across Saxon territory.

Later, the city of Eger withdrew its commitment to finance the construction of the line. In order to minimize costs, a joint route management with the Hof-Egerer Eisenbahn in Bohemian territory was ultimately decided.

On June 1, 1863, the construction of the line began with the preparatory work. The foundation stone was laid on the Egerviadukt on November 25, 1863 . In June 1864, over 9,000 workers were finally employed on the route construction site.

For the construction and operation of the part of the route, the Voithersreuth - Egerer Eisenbahn , located on Austrian territory ( Bohemia ) and to be financed by the royal Saxon government , a treaty was signed in Vienna on November 30, 1864 (ratified four weeks later) between Austria and Saxony completed via the connection of the railway to the Bohemian railway lines. Was established in the contract including the connection of Voithersreuth-Cheb railway to the baierischen Eastern Railway Company produced route Waldsassen -Eger.

On November 1, 1865, the line was opened at the same time as the Bavarian connection between Hof and Eger . The cost of building the Voigtland state railway was later given as a total of 6.1 million thalers.

In Plauen and Oelsnitz in particular, however, a direct route from Plauen was still required, as had already been planned in 1856. The Plauen city council turned to the Saxon government several times with petitions to get this route built. On May 7, 1868, the Plauen – Oelsnitz line was approved in the Saxon state parliament. The line was opened on November 1, 1874.
