Johannes Coler also Johannes Colerus (born September 19, 1566 in Adelsdorf near Goldberg / Silesia ; † October 23, 1639 in Parchim ) was a Protestant pastor and the most important representative of early household literature .

Life

Coler was the son of the theologian Jacob Coler and grew up in Berlin from 1577. After studying Protestant theology in Frankfurt (Oder) and Rostock , where he received his master's degree, Coler lived as a preacher in Doberan and Parchim.

He summarized the writings his father had collected and organized them into a perpetual calendar (first edition: Wittenberg 1591), which also contained health advice. He later revised his father's writings and published them between 1593 and 1601 as a six-part Oeconomia or house book. The complete edition appeared fourteen times in the 17th century and has also been translated into other languages. His writings not only include agricultural advice (on topics such as fishing, horticulture ...) and collections of recipes (brewing beer, baking bread and cooking recipes), but also rules of conduct. These rules of conduct were very Lutheran and were changed in later editions after his death. Today his work gives a comprehensive overview of life before the Thirty Years War .
