Johannes Frasnelli

Johannes Andreas Ernst Frasnelli (* 1974 in Lucerne ) is a doctor and university lecturer with Swiss , Italian and Canadian  citizenship.

Life

Frasnelli was born in Switzerland, his mother's homeland, and grew up in Algund in South Tyrol . He attended the Realgymnasium Meran , in 1993 he began studying medicine at the University of Vienna , which he completed in 2001. He wrote his doctoral thesis at the University of Vienna on the subject of "Smell and taste in chronic renal insufficiency". Frasnelli then worked at the Interdisciplinary Center for Smell and Taste at the Technical University of Dresden as a research assistant and stayed there until 2005.

In 2006 and 2007 he carried out research at McGill University in Canada and in 2008 and 2009 also worked in Montréal at the Children's Hospital Center hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine . In 2009 his habilitation (title: “The intranasal trigeminal system”) was accepted at the Technical University of Dresden , the first reviewer of the work was Thomas Hummel .

In 2010, Frasnelli stayed for a few months as a visiting scientist at the research institute Monell Chemical Senses Center in the US state of Pennsylvania , and from 2010 to 2013 he was also an employee at the Université de Montréal . In 2013 and 2014 he held a position at the Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur in Montréal , and in June 2014 he took up a professorship in the Department of Anatomy at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières .

In his scientific work, Frasnelli deals in particular with the human sense of smell , including the connection between the sense of smell and the brain and the influence of diseases on the sense of smell. In 2019 he published the book “We smell better than we think”, which was named Science Book of the Year 2020 by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research in the Medicine / Biology category.
