Professional career

As the son of a bricklayer, Johannes Gessner experienced the Second World War, first as an air force helper , then with the Reich Labor Service and finally as a medical soldier in the air force. Until 1946 he was an American prisoner of war. In the winter semester of 1946, he began studying medicine in Jena . During his studies, he was given a teaching position for the sports teacher training. In 1960 he was appointed senior physician in surgery, completed his habilitation in 1964 and was appointed head of the clinic in Saalfeld at the end of 1965 . In 1972 he was appointed professor. Athletic career

Johannes Gessner began to play organized football in 1948, initially at SG Jena-Stadion, from which the company sports associations (BSG), BSG Carl Zeiss and BSG Motor later developed. After he had also been active in student football, he was used in the league games of the 1st team of BSG Motor for the first time in the 1951/52 season. The match between Rotation Plauen - Motor Jena (1: 2), in which he was called up in the second-rate GDR league as a right winger, was his only league game this season, and he was only marginally involved in the rise of the Jena. In the GDR league season 1952/53 Motor Jena had to complete 32 games. Gessner was only used five times at irregular intervals, mainly again on the right wing. After a year Jena had to relegate to the second division again, and Gessner was only a substitute there at BSG Motor. In 1953/54 he played two, 1954/55 four league games, always as a right winger. He then disappeared from the higher football leagues for two years. In 1958 (now the calendar year season) he appeared again for a game at the top division club SC Dynamo Berlin in the game BSG Progress Weissenfels - SC Dynamo (2-0) as a middle runner .
