Johannes Hentschel
Johannes Hentschel (born May 10, 1908 ; † April 27, 1982 in Achern , Baden-Württemberg ), known as Hannes Hentschel , was a machinist in Adolf Hitler's " Führerbunker " and the last member of staff to leave the bunker on May 2, 1945.
Life
On July 4, 1934, Hentschel was employed as an electrical machine foreman in the Old Reich Chancellery in Berlin , and from mid-April 1945 he operated the supply units in the engine room in the driver's bunker.
Together with Rochus Misch, he was the only one who last stayed in the so-called Führerbunker and slept there. Hentschel provided light and water, and mixing by telephone and telex provided external contact. Five minutes after Misch left the bunker on May 1st, Joseph and Magda Goebbels killed themselves with hydrogen cyanide. Both were promoted upstairs the next morning and were incompletely burned. Hentschel later justified his stay with his responsibility for the people in the emergency hospital in the basement of the New Reich Chancellery , since his machinist activity was essential for the electricity, water and air supply of the facility and thus for the lives of the wounded and civilians seeking protection there.
Hentschel was on May 2, 1945, at 9 am from the Red Army in captivity taken up to the 4. April 1949 lasted. He died in Achern in 1982 .
