Live and act

Johannes Hermann Gottfried Zur Mühlen was a son of Franz Gottfried Zur Mühlen (1718–1778), who worked as a pastor at the Marienkirche . The ancestors of the father came from the Westphalian noble family Von Zurmühlen, which can be found in Haus Ruhr since around 1400 . Family members who converted to Protestantism had to leave the clan association and almost all of them gave up their titles of nobility. The mother of Johannes Hermann Gottfried Zur Mühlen was called Elsabe, née Berends (1724–1796). Her father Johann Hinrich Berends worked as a council servant and businessman in Flensburg .

From 1791 Johannes Hermann Gottfried Zur Mühlen was pastor on the Hallig Nordmarsch , from 1799 at the old church on Pellworm and from 1811 he was pastor at St. Nicolai in Eckernförde . As a writer, he dealt with rationalism and tried to defuse the conflicts between thinking and belief. He mediated the hard-fought dispute over the 95 theses of Claus Harms and called for people to be patient and to adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He dealt in particular with issues relating to schools and was a member of the "Commission for the Promotion of Mutual Schools". To this end, in 1814 he wrote the “Guide for Confirmands in Teaching the Christian Religion”.

King Friedrich VI. appointed Zur Mühlen as a knight of the Dannebrog because of his services for improving the education of the people .

Johannes Hermann Gottfried Zur Mühlen married Sara Vollquarts (1772–1836) on January 24, 1793. The couple had four sons and two daughters.
