Johannes Hugo Helbig

Johannes Hugo Helbig (born April 1, 1845 in Ponitz , Saxony-Altenburg , † in the 20th century) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher .

Johannes Hugo Helbig, son of a manorial estate leaseholder , studied after attending grammar school in Leipzig and the Abitur examination in Zwickau from 1862 at the University of Leipzig , first theology, then natural sciences and philology, finally classical philology. In 1869 he received his doctorate and passed the state examination. In 1870/71 he was a trial teacher at the Thomas School in Leipzig. From 1871 to 1873 he taught as a senior teacher at the grammar school in Plauen , from 1873 at the grammar school in Bautzen , where in 1891 he received the title of "professor". On January 1, 1911, he retired.

Like numerous other high school teachers of his time, he published alongside his teaching activities and contributed articles for Wilhelm Heinrich Roscher's Detailed Lexicon of Greek and Roman Mythology .
