John I of Salzburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John I (* before 739; † June 10, 746 or 747 ) was the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Salzburg and abbot of the St. Peter monastery . His predecessors did not yet have a clearly defined and generally recognized diocese, which is why they are referred to as bishops in Salzburg.

Life

In cooperation with the Bavarian Duke Odilo , Bonifatius established four dioceses (bishoprics) with clearly defined borders in 739 as the Pope's representative (legate) . With Salzburg, Johannes von Bonifatius received the first and most powerful of these Bavarian dioceses. Pope Zacharias assigned John I the region of Carantania (roughly today's Carinthia ) as a mission and diocesan area. In addition to donations in Isengau , Johannes received valuable property for the gradual development of the country, especially in the Osterhorn group .

Johannes also restored the Maximilian cell (in today's Bischofshofen ) , which had been destroyed several times, and introduced the Benedictine monastic rule in St. Peter's Abbey.
