Life

John joined with twelve years in the monastery of the Congregation of Benedictine one. He came from a respected family in Biberach. Under Abbot Michael Ryssel at the age of sixteen he asked for admission to the order. He held several offices within the monastery, such as that of cellar master and monastery economist. In 1468 he was elected abbot by the convent . A major challenge in his reign was the first time in Swabia occurring plague . In the area of what is now Germany , the epidemic first appeared in 1349, and the plague did not reach Upper Swabia until 1470. Whole hamlets and villages and not just individual houses were then uninhabited. Johannes Knuß proved himself in this situation. He had remedies from the monastery pharmacy distributed free of charge to the population and set up a feeding system for the poor in the monastery kitchen .

Bellamont

As a result of the plague in 1470, not a single person lived in the village of Bellamont . As a result, the village was re- parished in neighboring Ellwangen . Abbot Johannes encouraged the resettlement of residents in the village. After the settlement of new residents, he received from the Bishop of Constance Hermann III. von Breitenlandenberg granted permission to incorporate Bellamont into the parish association of the Ochsenhausen monastery. Despite his efforts and services to Bellamont, however, the pastor of Ellwangen steadfastly, but in vain, refused this integration.
