Johannes Kopp (born July 2, 1734 in Darmstadt , † January 23, 1796 in Hamburg ) was a German building yard inspector .

Live and act

Johannes Kopp was born in Darmstadt. In Hamburg he had a residence on the Fuhlentwiete, followed by his own house on the Poggenmühle / corner of Wandrahm. Under the direction of Ernst Georg Sonnin , he helped as a carpenter foreman with the construction of the roof structure of the St. Michaeliskirche . He then worked as a construction clerk. In 1767 he took over the management of the municipal building yard . Since he proved to be hardworking and reliable, he received several additional payments. In addition to his work at the building yard, he taught the building drawing class of the Patriotic Society from 1765 from 1769 to 1773 .

His son Heinrich Christoph (1773–1798) succeeded his father as head of the building yard. He died two years after taking office. He had planned to expand the Hamburg Stock Exchange to the Commerzium; however, the plans were not implemented.

Buildings

For the buildings that he designed, Kopp chose established architectural forms. In 1769 he planned the Pesthofkirche . The equilateral octagonal floor plan followed, like the church on the market by Heinrich Schmidt, the design by Cay Dose for the Rellinger church and the church in Brande-Hörnerkirchen . From 1769 to 1771 he was in charge of the new building of the Eimbeck House , which he designed in the late Baroque style. In 1771, when designing the facade of the south wing of the town hall , Kopp used a stricter form. He designed the outer walls of the church hall and sacristy of the Sankt Katharinenkirche in 1791/92 in a similar way . The three-winged orphanage in Hamburg also came from Kopp. He provided it with a mansard roof and a small turret. He also looked after numerous smaller structures. This included magazines, guard buildings, stables and repair work on bridges and locks. To this day only the work on the Sankt Katharinenkirche has been preserved.

While working as a builder, Kopp wrote numerous reports.
