Johannes Menck (born January 21, 1845 in Hamburg , † April 1, 1919 in Altona ) was a German machine manufacturer and a Prussian member of parliament.

Johannes Menck

He was the son of the wine wholesaler Johann Andreas Menck (1805-1882) and his mother Gesine (née Witt) (1824-1907).

Together with his friend Dietrich Alexander Hambrock (1841–1895) Menck first received practical training in companies in Hamburg and Ottensen . Then both studied at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe . They later worked in English and German factories.

Together, Menck and Hambrock founded the Menck & Hambrock machine factory in Ottensen in 1868, partly financed by Johann Andreas Menck . The advantage of this location was that, unlike Hamburg and Altona, the municipality belonged to the German customs inland. This eliminated customs duties for intra-German trade.

The company manufactured, among other things, transmission systems, portable steam engines, steam winches and steam rams. These were based on our own patents and continuously improved designs. The company became a leader in excavator construction. The type of bucket excavator co-developed by the company was still largely unknown abroad.

In 1886 the 1000th steam boiler and in 1903 the 3000th boiler were delivered.

After the partner's death, Menck ran the company alone before his sons Hans and Carl joined the company as technical and commercial managers. The sons took over the company together in 1908. Before 1914 around 1200 people were employed in the company and exports exceeded domestic sales.

Menck was also Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce in Altona. As a member of the national liberal party , he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives from 1904 to 1908 .
