Johannes Schneider (theologian, 1857)

Johannes Konrad August Ferdinand Schneider (* July 7, 1857 in Höxter ; † August 12, 1930 ibid) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian.

Life

Schneider, a son of pastor Friedrich Robert Schneider (1827-1893), became assistant preacher in Hausberge in 1881 after studying Protestant theology in Greifswald, Leipzig and Bonn . In 1882 he became the parish administrator in Herlinghausen (now part of Warburg ), where he was ordained . In the following year he moved to the rectory in Lichtenau (Westphalia) , and in 1891 to the Lutheran parish of Elberfeld . From 1918 he worked in Berlin, first as a consultant in the Evangelical Upper Church Council of the Prussian Regional Church, from 1924 as Senior Consistorial Councilor in the Federal Church Office of the German Evangelical Church Federation . From 1922 he was also an honorary professor at the University of Berlin and from 1923 head of the church statistics office of the German Evangelical Church Committee .

Schneider is best known as the founder and longstanding editor of the Church Yearbook . Since 1893 he published the official calendar for evangelical clergymen founded by his father in 1873 . In the second part he compiled information on the personnel status of the regional churches and the faculties as well as news from church life, which soon appeared separately in the C. Bertelsmann Verlag , first as the theological yearbook for the year ... , from 1900 on as the church yearbook the year ... . Schneider published the yearbook, which from 1910 was called the Church Yearbook for the Protestant regional churches in Germany , until his death and thus became one of the pioneers of church statistics. His successor as editor was Hermann Sasse . In 1917 the University of Greifswald awarded Schneider an honorary doctorate .
