Johannes Schnell (legal historian)

Johannes Schnell (born August 31, 1812 in Basel , † October 16, 1889 in Bern ) was a Swiss legal historian .

Life

Johannes Schnell, son of the lawyer Johann Rudolf Schnell , attended education in Basel and then completed a law degree in Heidelberg , Bonn and Berlin , which he completed with a doctorate in Heidelberg. In 1837 he completed his habilitation and was associate professor of Swiss civil and criminal law at the University of Basel from 1838–1839 and full professor from 1839–1878 , of which he was rector from 1851–1852 .

Merits quickly gained through the edition of legal sources , which he put together after extensive archival research. In addition to his teaching and research activities, he worked from 1836–1875 as a criminal judge and as the president of the civil court in Basel. Together with Friedrich von Wyss , Friedrich Salomon Ott and Johann David Rahn , he founded the Zeitschrift für Schweizerisches Recht (ZSR) in 1852 , which he was editorially responsible for until 1882.

His daughter Johanna Juli ( Jenny ) (* 1841 in Basel) was married to the deaconry head Johann Friedrich Dändliker .
