Johannes Velten (also: Velt [h] e [i] m , * December 27, 1640 in Halle an der Saale ; † 1691 or 1692 probably in Hamburg ) was an actor .

Johann was the son of councilor Valentin Velthem (born December 3, 1607 in Bremervörde ; † May 19, 1664 in Halle / Saale) and his first wife Catharina Drechsler († 1642), who married on August 23, 1630. Thus he was a half-brother of the Jena professor Valentin Veltheim , as well as numerous other siblings. He attended the schools and high school in Halle and Magdeburg, the respective leaders of which were well acquainted with his father. Velten began to study at the University of Wittenberg on August 14, 1658, which he continued in 1660 at the University of Leipzig, where on February 24, 1661 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. He also became a candidate for theology.

He joined the Carl Andreas Paulsen actor troupe in the mid-1660s and married the principal's daughter, Catharina Elisabeth Paulsen , in 1671 . In 1672 he founded his own theater company, the later High German court comedians , and after his death in 1678 took over Paulsen's theater privileges. For more than 20 years he directed and professionalized this German touring stage and, as an artist with linguistic and literary skills, performed pieces based on German, Italian and French models, including those based on Molière, which he valued . His troupe was one of the best German-speaking theaters of the time and was successfully continued by his wife after his death.

Velten and his wife were involved in the theater dispute with Lutheran Orthodoxy , in the course of which all theater people were refused the Eucharist and confession due to their immorality and arch-sin . Against this background, Velten were withheld from the sacraments of death when he died .
