Valentin Veltheim also: Velthem, Velthemius, (born March 11, 1645 in Halle (Saale) , † April 25, 1700 in Jena ) was a German moral philosopher and Lutheran theologian .

Life

Veltheim was the son of councilor Valentin Velthem (born December 3, 1607 in Bremervörde ; † May 19, 1664 in Halle (Saale)) and his second wife Anna Gantzland, who married on May 30, 1643 († June 8, 1659 in Halle (Saale) )). He was baptized on March 13, 1645. Veltheim attended the grammar school in Halle, which was under the direction of Rector Valentin Berger (born January 18, 1620 in Ohrdruf; † May 22, 1675 in Halle (Saale)) and Vice-Rector Martin Lipenius . Sponsored by Johannes Olearius , he moved to the University of Jena in the summer semester of 1664 to study theology. In Jena, for example, he found his first point of reference in Christian Chemnitz (1615–1666). The prerequisites for such a degree were an elementary basic study of the philosophical sciences. For this purpose he attended the lectures of Johann Zeisold , Johann Frischmuth , Erhard Weigel , Johann Andreas Bose , Caspar Posner and Georg Götze (1633–1699).

After he had advanced to a master's degree in philosophical sciences in a short time, he turned to theological studies. For this purpose, he used the lectures by Johannes Musaeus , Christian Chemnitz, Johann Ernst Gerhard the Elder , Sebastian Niemann and Friedemann Bechmann . He also participated in the Salana reading business. In August 1672 he was appointed professor for ethics and politics and in 1679 took over the chair for logic and metaphysics. After he had received his doctorate in theology on January 14, 1680, he became professor of theology in 1683, which task he carried out until the end of his life. In addition, participated in the organizational tasks of the Salana. He was dean of the philosophical and theological faculties several times and in the summer semester of 1681, as well as the winter semesters of 1685, 1691, 1695 and 1699 rector of the Alma Mater . He is best known in the scholarly dispute with Samuel von Pufendorf , when he attacked him in 1674 with his writing Vera et genuina fundamenta juris naturae contra Pufendorfium . His main theological work is the Theologia moralis , published in 1691 .
