Johannes Volmer (born January 19, 1930 in Dresden ; † July 8, 2015 in Chemnitz ) was a German engineer and professor of transmission technology. He was best known for his numerous textbooks.

Life

After studying mechanical engineering specializing in conveyor technology at the Technical University of Dresden from 1949 to 1953, Volmer was an assistant and senior assistant at the Institute for Gear Engineering there and received his doctorate in 1956 on the subject of a contribution to the generation of coupling curves . He then worked as a research assistant and designer in the VEB Booking Machine Plant Karl-Marx-Stadt (formerly Astra-Werke Chemnitz , or Wanderer-Continental ) and was a permanent member of the Chamber of Technology from then until 1990 .

In 1959 he took over the management of the Institute for Gear Technology at the University of Mechanical Engineering in Karl-Marx-Stadt, where he also worked as a lecturer. In 1966 he completed his habilitation on the theory and construction of star gear drives . Thereupon he was appointed professor with a teaching assignment in 1967 and full professor for gear technology in 1969 and was the first director of the machine components section at the University of Mechanical Engineering in Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1968 to 1972 . At the same time he was appointed head of research in the areas of gear technology and robot technology / assembly automation. From 1980 to 1984 he was head of the engineering department. In 1995 he retired.

In 1995, Volmer's services to gear technology were recognized by the State Technological University “Stankin” in Moscow with an honorary doctorate.

Through his work as a professor of gear technology, Volmer encountered the mechanical problems of oval turning and developed new oval turning devices. Together with EW Newton he founded the Elliptical Turning Association .

Johannes Volmer died on July 8, 2015 in Chemnitz at the age of 85.
