Johannes Wohlmuth
Johannes Wohlmuth (János) [ ˈjaːnoʃ ] (* 1642 in Rust ; † January 9, 1724 in Ödenburg ) was a Baroque composer and organist in the Kingdom of Hungary .
Life
Johannes Wohlmuth was born in 1642 in what was then the market town of Rust in a German-speaking Protestant family. He studied in Ödenburg, Breslau and Wittenberg , where he published his Disputatio de aqua in 1666 . From 1667 to 1674 he was rector and cantor in Rust. He then fled to Regensburg because of religious persecution , where he was a music teacher until 1686. After his return he worked as an organist and Kapellmeister in Ödenburg until 1721. He taught alongside other students, two sons of Prince Pál Esterházy , " on the clavir ".
A collection of dances for harpsichord and a Miserere for five soloists, five-part choir and orchestra has come down to us from him (1696). He wrote the first textbook for keyboard instruments in Hungary, the "Starck Virginalbuch", with secular and ecclesiastical pieces.
