Johannes Zollikofer von und zu Altenklingen (born December 29, 1633 in St. Gallen , † April 23, 1692 in Herisau ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor .

Live and act

Johannes Zollikofer von Altenklingen was born in St. Gallen and studied in Zurich and Basel. At the age of twenty he was called to Geneva as a German preacher. He continued his studies in Oxford and Cambridge.

He worked as a deacon in St. Leonhard and St. Gallen , as a pastor and treasurer in Herisau in Appenzell Ausserrhoden . He was the author, translator and editor of several books.

According to the Stemmatologia Sangallensis by Johann Jacob Scherrer (1653-1733), Zollikofer was a preacher from 1653 to 1692, German adjunct in Geneva from 1653 to 1654, German helper in Amsterdam from 1655 to 1655 , Synodalis from 1657 to 1692 , and deacon from 1657 to 1666 St. Leonhard, 1657–1692 Collega Disputat. , 1657-1692 Collega music. , 1660-1660 Bussner Coll. theol. I, 1665-1665 Bussner Coll. theol. II, 1666–1692 pastor in Herisau, (the 13th after the Reformation), 1667–1692 Synodalis of Ausserrhoden, 1671–1692 Camerarius of Ausserrhoden and 1684–1692 Ordinari Marriage Judge of Ausserrhoden.

Zollikofer's sermon The unfortunate fiends wretched condition , delivered on May 5, 1689 in Herisau, printed in the same year in St. Gallen, based on the work Magiologia. Christian warning for the superstition and sorcery of Bartholomäus Anhorn the Younger , in which a critical presentation of magical practices takes place. Witch trials and killings took place in the vicinity of Zollikofer's statements .

His Heavenly Incense Treasure , first published in 1691 , gained popularity as a book of edification for over 150 years.

family

Johannes Zollikofer was a son of Georg Zollikofer (1591–1634) and Judith Schobinger. On November 3, 1657, he married Catharina Gonzenbach (1631–1672), a daughter of Heinrich Gonzenbach and Sabina Zwicker. He had a daughter with her in 1663 who died unbaptized, and in 1665 a daughter, Judith.

In his second marriage, on June 11, 1672, he married Susanna Zollikofer (1644–1685 in Herisau), a daughter of Niklaus Zollikofer and Benigna Zollikofer, and had four children with her: Magdalena (1673–1700 in Amsterdam ), Georg Niklaus (1676– 1706 in East India ), Johannes (* 1681), who died young, and another Johannes (* 1683).

In his third marriage on June 15, 1686, he married Elisabeth Zollikofer (1656-1694), daughter of David Zollikofer and Elisabeth Högger, and had three children with her: David (* 1688), Elisabeth (1690-1694) and Gottlieb (1691) .
