The Catholic parish church of John the Baptist is the village church in the Unterigling district of the Igling community in the Landsberg am Lech district .

History and description

The church, located in the center of the village of Igling, was built in 1748/49 by the master builder Stephan Socher from Denklingen . In the original it had a clapboard-covered onion dome , which, however, fell into flames during the great Iglinger village fire in 1869 and was replaced by a pointed helmet in 1871. The church was consecrated on October 5, 1755 by Auxiliary Bishop Franz Xaver Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden from Augsburg .

The bright, spacious room contains a cycle of frescoes from 1749 on the life of the church patron John the Baptist by the Augsburg painter Johann Georg Lederer . The pulpit and a rococo altar date from 1750–1752, the original altar paintings were removed in the 19th century and replaced in 1925 by depictions of the baptism of Christ and the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian by the painter Huwyler.

The altar of Mary is adorned with a brotherhood picture of Mary of the Good Council in a rocaille frame.

In 1805 a stately parsonage with a mansard half-hipped roof was built next to the church, which has housed the parish hall and the town hall of the Igling administrative community since the end of the 20th century .
