Johannes van Vloten (born January 18, 1818 in Kampen, Netherlands , † September 21, 1883 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch writer and historian.

Life

Johannes van Vloten studied theology and philosophy at the University of Leiden and, after successfully completing this course, got a job as a teacher at the grammar school in Rotterdam . In 1846, however, he returned to Leiden, where he lived for eight years without office.

In 1854 he married Johanna Elisabeth van Gennep, with whom he had seven children. His eldest son Willem van Vloten was later an engineer in the metallurgical industry . Also in 1854 Johannes van Vloten accepted a position as professor for Dutch language and literature at the Athenaeum in Deventer . In 1867 he gave up this post and settled as a freelance writer in Bloemendaal near Haarlem, and later in Haarlem itself. There he died at the age of 65 on September 21, 1883.

Johannes van Vloten's literary work covers a broad spectrum. His works on Dutch history were widely recognized. This is followed by the biographies of Paschier de Fyne naar zijn leven en geschriften (Herzogenbusch 1853) and Baruch d'Espinoza (Amsterdam 1852), important for Dutch cultural history . Johannes van Vloten made a contribution to Dutch literature through text editions and literary historical works. His double biography of the supporters of the Prince of Orange , Willem and Onno Zwier van Haren , was controversial . But his pamphlets against the prevailing orthodoxy were also discussed. Together with Jan Pieter Land , in 1882 he edited a two-volume edition of Baruch Spinoza's works .
