Onno Zwier van Haren (born April 2, 1713 in Leeuwarden , † September 2, 1779 in Wolvega, municipality of Weststellingwerf , Friesland ) was a Dutch statesman and poet, descending from the Van Haren family.

Life

Onno Zwier van Haren, brother of Willem van Haren , was like him a supporter of the Prince of Orange and, as a high civil servant, lived most of his life amidst the turmoil of politics.

After the death of Anna, Wilhelm IV's widow , he retired to his estates, where he devoted himself to poetry and died on September 2, 1779.

His most excellent poem is the epic De Geusen (Amsterdam 1772), which celebrates the Dutch struggle for freedom and was first published under the title: Aan het Vaterland (new edition, provided by Willem Bilderdijk and Rhijnvis Feith , 1785, 2 vol., With many Redesign of the text). Van Haren also wrote lyrical poems, two tragedies: Agon, Sulthan van Bantam and Willem de Erste , and a comedy : Pletje en Agnletje .

His collected works have been republished with those of his brother and both biographies by Johannes van Vloten (Deventer 1874).
