Willem van Vloten

Willem van Vloten (born September 13, 1855 in Deventer , Netherlands; † October 26, 1925 in Nunspeet ) was a Dutch metallurgical engineer who, as technical director at the Hörder mining and smelting association in Dortmund , later Phoenix , was instrumental in technological development of the blast furnace operation.

Life

Willem van Vloten was the eldest son of the Dutch philosophy professor Johannes van Vloten . He studied at the Bergakademie Clausthal and passed his exam there in 1875. He then worked at Georgsmarienhütte near Osnabrück and worked as a mining engineer in Spain for a year . He returned to Germany and became blast furnace manager at the Dortmund Union . In 1884 he married Marie Helene Wagner, daughter of the Dortmund machine manufacturer Wagner.

In 1893 he moved to the Hörder Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein , also as manager of the blast furnace operation . He was later appointed technical director and led the work, which in 1906 with the Phoenix AG merged, until his retirement in 1917. During this time, has Willem van Vloten great contributions to the exploration of the blast furnace operation and utilization of blast furnace gout gases obtained and published several reports in Stahl und Eisen , the magazine for the German iron and steel industry . Under his leadership, the first large gas engine on the mainland was put into operation in Hörde . Since the founding year 1880 he was a member of the Association of German Ironworkers (VDEh) , which appointed him to the board in 1910.

After his retirement he settled on his estate in Nunspeet and devoted himself to nature and the reforestation of the dune landscape. He died at the age of 70 on October 26, 1925.

Honors

  • In 1903 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle , fourth class, for his services .
  • In Hörde a street and with it a subway station was named after Willem van Vloten.
