Early Gothic elements from sandstone built chapel suggest that the walls coinciding with the Kloster Wennigsen emerged. Dimensional inaccuracies in the floor plan, the processing of the quarry stones and an examination of the foundations indicate that it was built at the beginning of the 13th century. The chapel stands on a small hill that was outside the village at the time of construction. The chapel was first mentioned in 1226 in a deed of donation from Duke Heinrich of the Guelph . A Hufe Land and the copela (chapel) in Sutheren (the name of the place at the time) are transferred to the Wennigsen Monastery. In 1591 the monastery documents name the chapel Sorsum Filia (daughter) von Wennigsen. The monastery there is about three kilometers from the chapel.

Bell tower, built at the beginning of the 20th century

The maintenance obligation for the chapel was made by farmers who worked on the parish's three acres of land. Since 1780 the interest was waived on the condition that "the Meier should be held, that all repairs in and on the chapel are to be taken over". The tenants did not leave any notes about work to be done on the chapel. A renovation is only documented for 1904 . The western roof turret was replaced by a tower, the entrance was built on the north side of the tower and the windows were bricked up. Another major chapel renovation followed in 1964, which took two years to complete.

In 1989 the chapel was named Johanneskapelle (spelling also Johannes-Kapelle ) after Johannes the Evangelist . Since January 2009 the Sorsum Kapellengemeinde belongs to the Marien-Petri-Kirchengemeinde Wennigsen.

After the dissolution of the Sorsum chapel community in 2011, the Hannoversche Landeskirche made a bonus available, which serves to secure the preservation of the building, the maintenance of the chapel garden and the promotion of community life. It is the financial basis of the non-profit Johannis Foundation Sorsum, which was set up in the same year .
