Johanneskapelle (Steingaden)
The Catholic Johanneskapelle in Steingaden , a community in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau , was built in the middle of the 12th century. The chapel , next to the gatekeeper's house, is a protected architectural monument .
The rotunda was built by Welf VI. Erected in memory of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . The chapel originally stood elsewhere, it was in 1511 to its present location translocated . A Gothic vault was built inside , which was later painted.
In 1853 the chapel was acquired by the Reichsgraf Eckbrecht von Dürckheim-Montmartin family as a family burial place. A crypt was installed .
The neo-Romanesque Altar of Mary was created by Ludwig Foltz (1809–1867). The grave slabs of the count family have been preserved to this day.
