The Johanneskirche is a neo-Gothic Protestant church in the Neuenheim district of Heidelberg , which was built between 1899 and 1902.

history

After Neuenheim was incorporated into Heidelberg in 1891, the new district grew rapidly. The old Johanneskirche on Neuenheimer Marktplatz, evangelical since the Reformation , was soon too small. An extension was planned in 1895, but it was finally decided to build a larger church outside the old village center. In 1900, the foundation stone for the new church was laid at a bend in Handschuhsheimer Landstrasse , which took the name from the old church, but now refers to the Evangelist John , not John the Baptist . On May 11, 1902, the new Johanneskirche was consecrated in the presence of Grand Duke Friedrich I.

The plans for the building came from the architect Hermann Behaghel , the chief building director of the Grand Ducal Baden , who designed numerous historicist church buildings in Baden. The Johanneskirche was his first new church in Heidelberg, followed by the Christ Church in Weststadt , the Kreuzkirche in Wieblingen and the Friedenskirche in Handschuhsheim .

description

The style of the church is based on the Burgundian early Gothic , but in contrast to Gothic churches is designed as a central building . The floor plan is based on a Greek cross , with the southern arm (behind the altar) being separated as a confirmation hall. The church stands free at a fork in the road, so the facade is effectively designed on three sides. The striking 55 m high tower rises above the main entrance in the north.

The interior follows the Wiesbaden program , which was new at the time , which emphasizes functionality and promotes the unity of pulpit, altar and organ. The pulpit and baptismal font flank the altar, above which the organ is located. As a typical preaching church , the Johanneskirche has galleries running around on all sides . Only the depiction of the Sermon on the Mount above the altar has survived from the original painting , the rest was removed during a renovation in 1957.
