The Johanniskirche or St. Johannis Church in Rostock is the church of the parish of St. Johannis in the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . As one of the Bartning emergency churches from the time of reconstruction after the Second World War, it is a listed building .

history

The community was formed in 1946 from two districts of the Holy Spirit community and one area of the Jakobi community. After the Second World War and the associated sudden increase in Rostock's population through refugees and displaced persons, as well as as a result of the destruction of the Rostock Jakobikirche , it became necessary to build a church in the south-west of the city.

The architect Otto Bartning had worked out a type design for the aid organization of the Evangelical Churches in Germany , according to which congregations whose churches had been destroyed in the war could build emergency churches despite the difficult financial and supply situation in the post-war period . In Mecklenburg, in addition to Wismar , such a construction was also started in Rostock in the Barnstorfer Forest . A special feature in Rostock was the attached tower and the parish hall - Bartning's conceptual design allowed such individual additions or changes. The foundation stone was laid on June 12, 1949.

The timber trusses supporting the roof were prefabricated in Thuringia . The outer walls were built from bricks in the format of a monastery , which could be recovered from the rubble of the Jakobikirche. The realization of such a construction project was only possible through numerous unpaid hours of work by many congregation members, theology students and university teachers. Financial support also came from the church aid organization. The church was consecrated on September 17, 1950. On July 1, 1951, three bells could be installed in the tower, which are tuned to tones d - f - g . On the gallery one was 1,959 organ of Schuke in Potsdam consecrated.

Since autumn 2015, a choir has been built to the west of the church; the foundation stone was laid on January 8, 2016. The construction costs amounted to around 1.6 million euros. The community members themselves donated 250,000 euros through several campaigns. The Mecklenburg parish funded the project with 650,000 euros. The Hanseatic City of Rostock, the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Hermann Reemtsma Foundation also participated in the financing. After a competition, the Hamburg architects Johannsen und Partner was commissioned with the design. A large hall, an office for the pastor, a kitchen, cloakrooms, toilets and storage rooms were created on around 480 square meters. On October 9, 2016, the choir was inaugurated with a festival service in the presence of Federal President Joachim Gauck . Bishop Andreas von Maltzahn delivered the sermon .

Kantorei

With around 350 singers, the Johanniskirche choir is one of the largest in the country. From the small and large kurrende (children's choir), the choral choir (youth choir) and the figural choir (oratorio choir) to the Rostock motet choir , over 50 concerts are carried out every year in addition to participating in the church services. The founder of the choir was church music director Hartwig Eschenburg , the current cantor is Markus Johannes Langer .
