biography

Eschenburg is a son of the Rostock photographer Karl Eschenburg . Growing up in Warnemünde, he took piano lessons from 1946 and organ and choir director lessons from 1950. From 1953 he studied at the Evangelical Church Music School in Halle (Saale) and passed the A-exam in 1957. In the same year Eschenburg took over his first position as cantor of the Bützow collegiate church . Because of the limited musical development opportunities in a small town, he moved to the St. John's Church in Rostock as cantor in 1960 .

Here Eschenburg set up a choir, which, thanks to its structure, enables permanent offspring for all choirs. Starting with the carolers , a children's choir and a youth choir (choral choir) to the figural choir (oratorio choir) to the semi-professional motet choir, up to 350 singers are active in the choir. These choirs give regular concerts. A major concern of Eschenburg was the human cohesion in the choir community, which is achieved among other things through the annual one-week hike with the choral choir through Mecklenburg , which he introduced and is still cultivated today .

In 1974 Eschenburg was appointed church music director. He earned merits through his lively concert activity with the choirs of the Kantorei, with various guest conductors and also through the performance of the Christmas story by Carl Orff , the text of which he translated in Rostock Low German and through his commitment to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach . From 1987 to 2002 he was a member of the board of directors of the New Bach Society .
