Architecture and history

The two-storey residential building, facing the street, was built in 1854. The plot of land reaching back to the excise wall belonged to the linen weaver Georg Christian Leopold Lautenbach . A workshop wing was added to the rear of the plastered house. The construction of the late classical complex was probably carried out by the master mason Corte . The residential building has a jamb floor , the four-axis facade is consistently divided into fields. On the right side is the entrance to the courtyard, designed as a round arch . Aperture niches in the form of round arches were used as decorative elements in the passage .

In 1897 the property was taken over by the Richter & Schumann company. They have been running a successful beer and wine bar at Johannisstrasse 15 since 1895 and set up a wine office at Johannisstrasse 6 . They carried out renovations and modernizations. The workshop wing was extended and used as a wine office. This extension still has windows from the early uses. The entrance gate was designed in the neo-renaissance style of the Gründerzeit . The initials R and S for Richter and Schumann can be found on the grille . A shop may also have been built in during this time.

While large parts of the Dessau city center were destroyed during the Second World War, the property at Johannisstrasse 6 was retained.

1982 moved the field office Dessau of the Institute for Agricultural Research and Conservation Hall of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR . This use continued until the fall of 1989/90 .

The Handwerkerhof has been listed as a monument in the local monument register under registration number 094 41544 since 2017 .

The courtyard is considered to be important in terms of urban development and is one of the few remaining evidence from the mid-19th century in the Dessau city center and a well-known company in the city.
