John A. Lynn II. (Born March 18, 1943 in Glenview (Illinois) ) is an American military historian.

Lynn graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and from the University of California, Davis , with a master's degree in 1967, and received her doctorate in 1973 from the University of California, Los Angeles . 1973 to 1977 he was Assistant Professor of History at the University of Maine and 1978 Assistant Professor, 1983 Associate Professor and 1991 Professor at UIUC, which he remained until his retirement in 2009. From 2009 to 2012 he was Distinguished Professor of Military History at Northwestern University and then Visiting Professor at UIUC.

In 1994/95 he was Oppenheimer Professor of Warfighting Strategy at the US Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia.

He is particularly concerned with military history and institutions in France from the 17th century to the Napoleonic era, the cultural history of war, women in war and the history of terrorism.

In 2017 he received the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for Military History. He was President of the United States Commission on Military History from 2003 to 2007 and Vice President of the Society for Military History from 2005 to 2007. In 2004 he became Knight of the Order of the Palmes Académiques and in 2006 Commander of the Moroccan Order of Ouissam Alaouite.
