John B. Little

John B. Little (born January 15, 1956 in Elmira (New York) ) is an American mathematician who studies algebraic geometry .

Little studied mathematics at Haverford College from 1972 (bachelor's degree in 1976 magna cum laude ) and from 1976 at Yale University , where he received his doctorate in 1980 under Bernard Saint-Donat (Translation manifolds and the converse of Abel's theorem). 1979/80 he was at Harvard University . He became Assistant Professor in 1980, Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor of Mathematics at the College of the Holy Cross in 2003 .

In 1993/94 he was visiting scholar at Cornell University and in 2003 he was at MSRI .

He deals with algebraic geometry and commutative algebra including algorithmic aspects and with algebraic coding theory.

In 2016 he was awarded the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition from the American Mathematical Society, along with David A. Cox and Donal O'Shea for their introductory textbooks on algebraic geometry.
