Political career

Between 1995 and 2001 Barrett was a councilor for the Edinburgh district of South East Corstorphine . In the 1997 general election, Barrett was used as the campaign manager of his party colleague David Steel .

Barrett first appeared in the 2001 general election to national elections. He inherited his party colleague Donald Gorrie , who held the mandate of the constituency of Edinburgh West since 1997 and, after being elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999, did not propose any further elections to the British House of Commons . With 42.4% Barrett was able to achieve a majority of the votes and moved into the House of Commons for the first time. There he was a member of the Committee on International Development and from 2003 until the end of the 2005 electoral term spokesman for this content. In the general election in 2005 Barrett was able to expand his share of the vote in the constituency and thus held his mandate. Between 2005 and 2007 he served as deputy spokesperson for Scotland-related issues. In the shadow cabinet of the Liberal Democrats, Barrett was designated as Minister for Labor and Pensions from 2008. At the general election in 2010 Barrett has not raced for more. His party colleague Michael Crockart held the mandate for Edinburgh West.
