John D. Bessler (born October 23, 1967 ) is an American lawyer and professor at the University of Baltimore . He is the author of several books on the death penalty , the beginnings of US law, and a biography of Cesare Beccaria . He teaches civil litigation, international human rights, contract law, and legal work.

He was born to Bill and Marilyn Bessler, both of whom taught at Minnesota State University, Mankato . John Bessler is the husband of politician and former prosecutor Amy Klobuchar . The couple married in 1993 and have a daughter who graduated from Yale University in 2017 with a law degree .

Life

Bessler grew up in Mankato , Minnesota . He first studied political science and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts degree . This was followed by law school at Indiana University Bloomington , where he also served as editor of the Indiana Law Journal . He also holds an MFA from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota and a Masters in International Human Rights from Oxford University .

From 1991 to 1996 Bessler worked as a lawyer at Faegre & Benson LLP. He then worked for a federal district judge as a law clerk for two years . From 1998 to 2007 he was a partner in the law firm Kelly & Berens. He also taught law until 2006 as an adjuncted professor at the University of Minnesota. From 2007 to 2009 he was Visiting Associate Professor at George Washington University . Since 2009 he has been a visiting lecturer at Georgetown University and also an Associated Professor at the University of Baltimore . At the same time, Bessler joined the Minnesota law firm Berens & Miller as a lawyer in early 2016.

Bessler has written and edited numerous books. His work The Birth of American Law: An Italian Philosopher and the American Revolution (2014) received the Scribes Book Award from the American Society of Legal Writers 2015 . He is the editor of Against the Death Penalty (2016) written by Stephen Breyer .
