John Hurst Butt (born October 30, 1850 in South Witham , † 1939 in Surrey ) was a British marksman .

John Butt took part in the Olympic Games in London in 1908 and in Stockholm in 1912 in a trap . In 1908 he finished 24th in the individual, while he won the bronze medal behind the first British team and the Canadians in the team competition together with Gerald Skinner , George Whitaker , William Morris , Harold Creasey and Richard Hutton . Butt was with 62 points as well as Morris the third best shooter of the team. In 1912 he did not get past 19th place in the individual, but secured another medal with the team. The British kept the German team one point at a distance with 511 points and secured the silver medal behind the US team (532 points). Butt was this time with 79 points the weakest shooter of the team, which also included Alexander Maunder , William Grosvenor , Harold Humby , Charles Palmer and George Whitaker.
