John Anthony Celona (born October 30, 1947 in San Francisco , California ) is an American composer , pianist , saxophonist , conductor and filmmaker .

Celona, ​​who performed in jazz clubs at the age of 15 , studied at San Francisco State University , the University of California, San Diego , the University of Pittsburgh and Indiana University . His teachers were Henry Onderdonk , Iannis Xenakis and Kenneth Gaburo . During his studies he played as a tenor saxophonist with his own quartet of jazz in clubs in San Francisco such as the Jazz Workshop or the Blackhawk . In 1971 he received first prize at the BMI Awards for Young Composers. He began to work at the Center for Music Experiment at the University of San Diego and began composing computer-generated music in 1972. In addition, he founded and directed various jazz and improvisation ensembles, including the Networks Orchestra .

From 1977 he taught composition at the University of Victoria . He headed the Fine Arts Studios for Integrated Media with the Laboratory for Extended Media , the Studio for Digital Innovation and Video and the Studio for Design, Installation and Sound and performed works by Anton Webern with Sonic Lab , the University's ensemble for new music , Karlheinz Stockhausen , John Cage , Edgar Varèse , Frederic Rzewski , Milton Babbitt and others. Supported by two Media Arts Creative Development Grants from the Canada Council , he designed TimbreSpace , software for composing, instrumenting, analyzing and performing music.

In 1985 Celona won first prize at the Concours international de musique électroacoustique de Bourges with Possible Orchestras (at the 21st Harmonic) . In 1999 he founded his own ensemble, John Celona's BlueCity , with which he recorded the CD CityLights . As a conductor he has recorded, among others, John Burke's Remember Your Power and Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire . His own compositions have appeared on Folkways ( Music in Circular Motions ), Radio Canada International ( Cordes de Nuit ), Miramar Records ( To Drive in LA ) and Music Gallery Editions ( Instrument Flying ). As a filmmaker, he received the California Film Award for his film Nightfreight 2010 and for “Best Art Direction” at the International Movie Trailer Festival .
