The Black Hawk was a jazz club in San Francisco that existed from 1949 to 1963.

The Black Hawk jazz club was one of the most famous venues for jazz music in San Francisco during its existence from 1949 to 1963. It was located on the corner of Turk Street and Hyde Street in the Tenderloin district. The club was owned by Guido Caccienti and Johnny and Helen Noga . The intimate club atmosphere was ideal for smaller jazz groups. In 1959, the club was able to pay fees for jazz events ranging from $ 300 to over $ 3,000 per week. A number of musicians recorded albums here; these include Miles Davis , Cal Tjader , Thelonious Monk , Shelly Manne and Mongo Santamaría . Billie Holiday and Lester Young gave their last concerts on the west coast here, the Modern Jazz Quartet their first. Even Charlie Parker found himself in a jam session in the Black Hawk one. Other well-known musicians who performed here were u. a. Dave Brubeck , John Coltrane , Dizzy Gillespie , Chet Baker , Stan Getz , Johnny Mathis , Art Blakey , Shorty Rogers , Art Pepper , Art Farmer , Gerry Mulligan , Horace Parlan and Russ Freeman . Art Tatum gave concerts here for the last 18 months of his life; he played in the Black Hawk in 1955 .

The Sunday afternoon sessions at the Black Hawk gave younger musicians the opportunity to perform. After such a concert, co-owner Helen Noga decided to manage the young singer Johnny Mathis. She was able to convince George Avakian , who was the A&R manager at Columbia Records , to come to San Francisco and hear him. After the concert, Avakian sent the telegram to the corporate headquarters: "Have found phenomenal 19-year-old boy who could go all the way." There is now a parking lot at the place where the Black Hawk was. A bronze plaque has been a reminder of the former club since 2012.
