John Chapman (politician, 1740)

John Chapman (born October 18, 1740 in Wrightstown , Bucks County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  January 27, 1800 in Upper Makefield , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1797 and 1799 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Chapman grew up during the British colonial era. Nothing is known about his youth and school education. Before 1776 he moved to Upper Makefield. In 1779 he became a justice of the peace in his homeland. He was also an appellate judge in Bucks County. Between 1787 and 1796 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton in the late 1790s .

In the congressional elections of 1796 Chapman was elected in the fourth constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives, which was still in Philadelphia at that time , where he succeeded Samuel Sitgreaves on March 4, 1797 . Until March 3, 1799 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Chapman no longer appeared politically. He died on January 27, 1800 in Upper Makefield.
