John Childs

John Charles Roger Childs (born June 21, 1949 ) is a British historian .

Childs studied at the University of Hull (BA) and King's College London , where he received his Ph.D. on the standing army of the Stuart Restoration ; JP Kenyon suggested the subject, with Ian Roy chairing it. He then worked in the defense industry and was a Sir James Knott Research Fellow at Newcastle University . From 1976 to 2009 he taught at the University of Leeds , where he was most recently Professor of Military History and Head of the Center for Military History . Since then he has been an emeritus professor.

His main research interests are the history of the British Army from 1660 to 1702 (published as a trilogy ), the Stuart Restoration and European military history of the early modern period . Childs published numerous monographs and articles, especially on the Glorious Revolution (1688/89). He is also Associate Editor of the New Dictionary of National Biography (NDNB) and, together with the French André Corvisier, editor of the English lexicon edition A Dictionary of Military History and the Art of War .

He was u. a. Advisor to the Ministry of Defense and Trustee of the Royal Armories , he is currently Chairman of the Battlefields Panel of English Heritage and the Royal Armories Development Trust. Childs was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society .
