Bilge Tarhan (born February 12, 1941 in Adana , † October 9, 2016 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player . He played his entire career for İstanbulspor , was involved in some important successes in the club's history and is therefore regarded by club and fan sites as one of the most legendary players in the club's history. With 227 first division appearances, he is the player with the third - highest number of Süper Lig appearances and with 58 first division goals behind his long-term strike partner Koço Kasapoğlu, the second most successful goalscorer in the club's history. With Kasapoğlu and İhsan Baydar , he formed one of the most successful strikers in the club and in all of Turkish football for over a decade . Because, in addition to his footballing career, he also successfully studied civil engineering at İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi , this topic has been taken up several times by the specialist press.

Private

Contrary to most statements, Tarhan was not born in Karaman , but on February 12, 1941 in Adana . His father was an official at the Turkish Post Office and had to move his family several times due to work. Tarhan was born in Adana and only moved to Karaman with his family a little later. They lived here until 1948 and then settled in neighboring and larger Konya . Here, his athletic talent made itself felt at school. In physical education he was always among the best and also came into contact with football . His father, who could not study himself and therefore had high demands on his son, saw playing football as a senseless gimmick that was a hindrance to his son's career and therefore banned his son from this sport. Since Tarhan secretly fled to play football at every opportunity, he was punished several times by his father for this. Tarhan did not let himself be dissuaded from playing football and kept playing secretly.

Career

society

Tarhan learned to play football as a street footballer and began his club career as a teenager at Konya Zaferspor . Here he made a name for himself early on through his good performances in Konya's football circles. So tried the then two largest and rival clubs Konya Gençlerbirliği and Konya İdman Yurdu to sign Tarhan. The richer club İdman Yurdu wanted to use Tarhan in its athletics team in addition to its soccer team and offered him 1000 lira for it. Due to the proximity of İdman Yurdu's training ground to Tarhan's place of residence, he had previously trained with the football team and was friends with some of the players. So Tarhan İdman Yurdu was not averse to the offer. Before he accepted, the dentist Ali İhsan Alaybeyi, a family friend and a member of Konya Gençlerbirliği's association, got involved and persuaded Tarhan to join Gençlerbirliği. Tarhan took part as a track and field athlete with İdman Yurdu in a tournament taking place in Bursa , but after returning to Konya he played for Konya Gençlerbirliği, one of the three clubs whose merger Konyaspor will later have emerged. For Gençlerbirliği he was active in both football and athletics teams until the end of his high school graduation. After graduating from high school, Tarhan decided to go to Istanbul and study an engineering discipline at a university. He wanted to fulfill the wish of his father, who had died a few years earlier.

So Tarhan moved to Istanbul in 1959 and began studying civil engineering at the renowned İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi . In addition to his studies, Tarhan wanted to continue playing football here. So he tried to join the Beşiktaş Istanbul association and therefore got in touch with a club official. Tarhan's previous club Gençlerbirliği had the same club colors as Beşiktaş, which is why he had sympathy for this club. The club official gave Tarhan, who was playing in the storm, little chance, as Beşiktaş had two of the best strikers in Turkish football at the time, Şenol Birol and Birol Pekel . He also referred to the fact that Beşiktaş had a lot of training units and that this program could not be mastered with a degree on the side. After Istanbul Tarhan was accompanied by his mentor Ali İhsan Alaybeyi. This was a party member of the CHP and was friends with the local CHP parliamentary group leader Ali Sohtorik and contacted him with Tarhan. Sohtorik played football successfully at İstanbulspor in his youth and was also the club's president at the time. Here Tarhan was accepted into the team squad without hesitation and objections and received a monthly salary of 250 lira. At Istanbulspor he mainly played for the club's youngsters. In the youth team he played with later greats such as Nedim Doğan , Erkan Velioğlu and Yılmaz Urul and was nominated for the Turkish U-18 national team a little later . He played in his first season, the 1959/60 also for the professional team of the club and scored three goals in seven league games. He scored his first goal against Beşiktaş, the club that had previously rejected him. With his second season he then conquered a regular place. Here he belonged especially in the three seasons 1962/63 , 1963/64 and 1964/65 to that team İstanbulspors, in which the club had one of the strongest phases in its club history. Here the 5th place in the table was reached twice and in the 1963/65 season the 6th place in the table. This season Tarhan was second on the list of goalscorers with 18 goals together with Metin Oktay and behind Güven Önüt , who had scored 19 goals. After these three successful years, Tarhan was always part of the starting eleven due to injury, but played with his team against relegation. In the summer of 1967 he rose with his club in the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , the then 2. Turkish league, but achieved direct promotion to the 1st Lig with the second division championship in 1967/68 . After the first division return, Tarhan played with his team in the upper half of the table.

With his team, Tarhan took part in the pre-season and this time in Bursa played Spor Toto Cup in August 1971 . In this tournament Tarhan clashed in the game of August 13, 1971 against Göztepe Izmir with his opponent Küçük Mehmet in a header duel and remained unconscious after the clash. He suffered a cerebral haemorrhage , was in a long coma and had to undergo brain surgery. After a long recovery period, he took part in a training session, but immediately afterwards decided to end his career.

National team

Tarhan started his national team career on March 20, 1960 with a test match for the Turkish U-18 national team against the Bulgarian U-18 national team. In that game, Tarhan scored all three goals for his team's 3-0 win. This was followed by four more U-18 missions.

In the summer of 1960 Tarhan was appointed to the squad of the Turkish Olympic team and took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Here he played all three games of his team and scored one goal.

1964 followed four missions for the Turkish U-21 national team .
