John Coates (film producer)

John Coates (born November 7, 1927 in Reigate , Surrey , † September 16, 2012 in Longfield , Kent ) was a British film producer .

Life

Coates took part in World War II as an officer . After the war he worked as a film distributor for Rank Films in Asia before returning to Great Britain. With George Dunning he founded the animation studio TV Cartoons in London in 1957 , which was later renamed TVC London. TVC produced successful commercials, but also films such as the animated series The Beatles . Coates was the 1968 production director of the Beatles animated film Yellow Submarine , which was directed by Dunning.

After Dunnings death in 1979, Coates reoriented himself. He became the producer of the short animated film The Snowman , which ran on the Christmas program of the newly founded channel 4 in 1982 . The snowman was awarded a BAFTA in 1983 and is now considered a British Christmas classic. Coates received an Oscar nomination for the film in 1983 for Best Animated Short Film . He was the producer of the Oscar-nominated short film Famous Fred and worked on a sequel to The Snowman entitled The Snowman and the Snowdog until his death . Coates died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 84.
