John Croker

Sir John Croker of Lineham (* around 1445; † 1508 ) was an English knight .

Life

Sir John Croker (also Crocker) was a son of John Croker and Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Yeo.

Sir John was in Devonshire from 1467 as Commissioner responsible for various tasks and served in the county and from 1471 to 1474 and from 1480 to 1483 as a Justice of Peace ( Magistrate ).

During the Wars of the Roses , John Croker was loyal to Edward IV and fought for his king in the 1471 battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury , where he was the king's standard bearer. On May 4, 1471, John Croker received the accolade as a Knight Bachelor in Tewkesbury .

In 1473 Sir John was among the men who were to besiege and free St. Michael's Mount , which was occupied by John de Vere, 13th Earl of Oxford , after Henry Bodrugan failed to do so.

Sir John enjoyed high esteem and trust with King Edward IV, so that he was appointed cupbearer ( cupbearer ) to the king and in 1475 belonged to the king's entourage during his campaign against France.

As Richards III. Sir John must have opposed the seizure of the crown in 1483. In any case, he was banned and ostracized by a Bill of Attainder . '

Under King Henry VII , Sir John rose again, sat for Devonshire in 1491/92 in parliament and fought in 1497 together with Edward Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon at the siege of Exeter against the pretender Perkin Warbeck .

Sir John died in 1508 and has his final resting place in the Church of Yealmpton, Devon.

Marriage and offspring

Sir John was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Fortescue.

The couple had at least one son:

  • John ⚭ Joan, daughter of Humphrey Arundel and second married to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Lewis Pollard.
