John Dick (1859)

John Dick (born June 17, 1794 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  May 29, 1872 in Meadville , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1859 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In the year of his birth, John Dick's parents moved their young son to Meadville, where he later attended public schools. He then became a member of the State Militia of Pennsylvania, in which he rose to brigadier general until 1831. Later he also worked in the banking industry. In 1850 he founded the J. & J. R. Dick bank . That same year he was an associate judge in Crawford County . He also campaigned for the construction of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad and became president of Crawford Mutual Insurance Co. Politically, he became a member of the Whig Party . After its dissolution, he joined the short-lived Opposition Party in the mid-1850s . Then he switched to the Republicans . In Congress , he should represent each of these parties for one legislative period.

In the congressional election of 1852 , Dick was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Alfred Gilmore on March 4, 1853 . After two re-elections in the 25th district of his state, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1859. These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . In 1858, Dick was put up for re-election by the Republican Party; but he declined the nomination.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he resumed his previous activities. He died on May 29, 1872 in Meadville, where he was also buried. John Dick's son Samuel (1836-1907) was also a member of Congress.
