Alexander Irvin

Alexander Irvin (born January 18, 1800 in Penns Valley , Center County , Pennsylvania , †  March 20, 1874 in Clearfield , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alexander Irvin attended public schools in his homeland. In 1820 he moved first to Curwensville and in 1826 to Clearfield, where he worked in trade as well as in the wood industry. Between 1828 and 1830 he was a chamberlain in Clearfield County ; in 1837 and 1838 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate . He then worked at various courts as a bailiff. From 1842 to 1844 he served as a clerk in Clearfield County. Politically, he joined the Whig Party .

In the congressional election of 1846 , Irvin was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Joseph Buffington on March 4, 1847 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1848, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1849 . This was initially shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War .

Between January and September 1850, Alexander Irvin was US Marshal for western Pennsylvania. After his resignation, his brother William took over this office. Professionally, he was back in the trade. Politically, he joined the new Republican Party . In June 1872 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , at which President Ulysses S. Grant was nominated for re-election. He died on March 20, 1874 in Clearfield, where he was also buried.
