John Dick (born January 29, 1877 in Eaglesham , Scotland , † September 14, 1932 in Welling ) was a Scottish football player and coach . The middle runner spent most of his playing career at Woolwich Arsenal . From 1920 to 1923 and again from 1927 to 1931, the Scotsman Sparta Prague trained .

Player career

Dick played for Airdrieonians FC until 1898 and then moved to the London club Woolwich Arsenal . The middle runner made his debut for the Gunners on September 3, 1898 in the Second Division against Luton Town . In his first season at Arsenal, Dick only missed four league games. In the next six years was always a regular player.

In the 1903/04 season he rose to the First Division with Arsenal , during which time he was the team's captain. Dick was one of the first Arsenal players to have 200 games for the club.

Gradually, Dick lost his regular place to John Bigden and from then on played mainly for the reserve team. Until 1912, however, he was sporadically used in the first team.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Dick moved to mainland Europe and initially coached the German Football Club Prague there . This wasn't his only stop in Prague. The Scot also trained the Sparta Prague team from 1920 to 1923 and from 1927 to 1931 .

Under the direction of John Dick, Sparta won the championships in 1921, 1922 and 1923. The team was also victorious in the 1923 cup competition. During his second term in office, Sparta won the Central Bohemian Cup in 1931 . In 1927 the team reached the final of the Mitropacup , which was held for the first time , where SK Rapid Vienna could be defeated. In 1930 you reached the final again, but this time you had to admit defeat to the same opponent.
