John Donnell Smith

John Donnell Smith (born June 5, 1829 in Baltimore , † December 2, 1928 there ) was an American plant collector and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Donn.Sm. "; earlier the abbreviation " JD Sm. " was also in use.

Life

Smith received a position as Honorary Associate at the United States National Herbarium , operated by the Smithsonian Institution , in 1905 . He held this position until his death in 1928. In 1894 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Smith was a connoisseur of the flora of Central America. He bequeathed his herbarium and library to the Smithsonian Institution .

Honor taxon

After him the plant genera Donnellsmithia J.M.Coult. & Rose ex JMCoult. from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) and the genus Neodonnellia Rose from the commelina family (Commelinaceae).
